He lured the two girls off to an abandoned house where he beat, raped, and drowned them. Although Gaskins had a reputation for being explosive, some people in the town just thought he was mentally disturbed.

Most tried to avoid even being around him, but some people actually liked him and considered him as their friend. One of the people who considered Gaskins to be a friend was Doreen Dempsey, a mother of a two-year-old baby girl and was pregnant with her second child at the time of her death.

She was leaving town and decided to get a ride to the bus station from her old friend. Gaskins took her to a wooded area where he raped and killed her and then raped, sodomized, and killed her baby.

He buried the two together. Gaskins was 42 years old in and had been killing steadily for the past 6 years.

Up until then, he had worked alone and that had helped him avoid being caught. However after he murdered three people when their van broke down on the highway, he needed some help.

Gaskins was also a hired hit man. John Powell and John Owens handled the communication between Gaskins and Kipper concerning the arrangement of the murder.

On February 12, , Diane Neely lured him out of the house by claiming to have car trouble. Gaskins then kidnapped and murdered Yates while Powell and Owens watched.

All three helped bury him. Diane Neely and her boyfriend decided to blackmail Gaskins. Around the same time, Gaskins had tortured and killed other people he knew, such as Kim Ghelkins, a year-old who rejected him.

He eventually killed and buried these two with the other locals in his private cemetery. Once again, he called on Walter Neely to help him bury the two bodies.

While there, Gaskins even showed Neely where he had buried other locals. After the disappearance of Kim Ghelkins, the authorities began to become suspicious of Gaskins.

After searching his apartment, they found clothing that had been worn by Ghelkins. On April 27, , Gaskins and Walter Neely were charged with eight counts of murder.

On May 24, , a jury convicted Gaskins of the murder of Dennis Bellamy and he was sentenced to death. In an attempt to avoid additional death sentences, he later confessed to seven more murders.

In November , the Supreme Court ruled that the death penalty was unconstitutional, so his death sentence was converted to life with seven consecutive life sentences.

After a few nights, he escaped again and managed to get on with a traveling carnival. He was released on March 13, , his 18th birthday. After reform school, Gaskins got a job on a tobacco plantation but could not resist temptations.

He and a partner got involved with insurance fraud by collaborating with tobacco farmers to burn their barns for a fee. People began talking about the barn fires and suspected Gaskins' involvement.

Gaskins' employer's daughter, a friend, confronted Gaskins about his reputation as the barn burner and he flipped. He split the girl's skull with a hammer and was sent to prison for five years for assault with a deadly weapon and attempted murder.

Prison life was not much different from his time in reform school. Gaskins was immediately assigned to sexually service one of the prison gang leaders in exchange for protection.

He realized the only way he could survive prison was to become a "Power Man," having a reputation as being so brutal and dangerous that others stayed away.

Gaskins' small size prevented him from intimidating others into respecting him; only his actions could do so. He set his sights on one of the meanest inmates in the prison, Hazel Brazell.

He was found guilty of manslaughter, spent six months in solitary confinement, and became a Power Man among prisoners.

He could look forward to an easier time in prison. Gaskins' wife filed for divorce in He panicked, escaped from prison, stole a car, and drove to Florida.

The marriage ended after two weeks. Gaskins then became involved with a carnival woman, Bettie Gates, and they drove to Cookeville, Tennessee, to bail her brother out of jail.

Gaskins went to the jail with bail money and a carton of cigarettes in hand. When he returned to the hotel, Gates and his stolen car were gone.

Gates never returned, but the police did. Gaskins discovered that he had been duped: Gates "brother" was actually her husband, who had escaped from prison with the aid of a razor blade tucked inside the carton of cigarettes.

It did not take long for police to learn that Gaskins was also an escaped convict, and he was returned to prison. He received an additional nine months in prison for aiding an escape and for knifing a fellow prisoner.

Gaskins was released from prison in August and returned to Florence, South Carolina. He got a job in the tobacco sheds but was unable to stay out of trouble.

This gave him the opportunity to break into homes in different towns where the group preached, making his crimes harder to trace. In , Gaskins married a third time but continued his criminal behavior.

He was arrested for statutory rape of a year-old girl but managed to escape to North Carolina in a stolen car.

There he met a year-old and married for the fourth time. She ended up turning him in to the police, and Gaskins was convicted of statutory rape.

He received six years in prison and was paroled in November Throughout his life, Gaskins had what he described as "them aggravated and bothersome feelings" that seemed to push him into criminal activity.

Gaskins became angry when she laughed at him for propositioning her for sex. He beat her until she was unconscious, then raped, sodomized, and tortured her.

He then sank her weighted body into a swamp where she drowned. This brutal act was what Gaskins later described as "a vision" into the "bothersome feelings" that haunted him throughout life.

He finally discovered how to satisfy his urges, and from then on, it was the driving force in his life. He worked on mastering his skill at torture, often keeping his mutilated victims alive for days.

As time passed, his depraved mind grew darker and more horrific. Gaskins preferred female victims, but that did not stop him from victimizing males.

He later claimed that by he had killed over 80 young boys and girls he found along North Carolina highways. Now he looked forward to his "bothersome feelings" because it felt so good to relieve them through torture and murder.

He considered his highway murders as weekend recreation and referred to killing personal acquaintances as "serious murders. His serious murders included his year-old niece, Janice Kirby, and her friend, Patricia Alsobrook.

In November , he offered them a ride home from a bar but drove them to an abandoned house, where he raped, beat, and finally drowned them. His next serious murder was of Martha Dicks, 20, who was attracted to Gaskins and hung around him at his part-time job at a car repair shop.

His mother apparently took so little interest in him that the first time he learned his given name—Donald—was when it was read out in his first court appearance, for a crime spree Gaskins committed along with a group of fellow delinquents which included robberies , assaults and a gang rape.

Following his conviction for his role in the crime spree, Gaskins was sent to reform school. There, he was regularly raped by his fellow inmates.

After escaping from the school, getting married and voluntarily returning to complete his sentence, he was released in , at the age of Gaskins briefly worked on a tobacco plantation until his arrest, after he attacked a teenage girl with a hammer for an alleged insult.

Gaskins was sentenced to six years' imprisonment at the South Carolina Penitentiary. After being raped and "owned" in prison, he earned his fellow prisoners' respect by killing the most feared man in the prison, Hazel Brazell.

As a result, Gaskins received an extra three years in prison, but from that point on he became the aggressor instead of the victim.

He escaped from prison in by hiding in the back of a garbage truck and fled to Florida , where he took employment with a traveling carnival.

Gaskins was arrested on November 14, , when a criminal associate named Walter Neeley confessed to police that he had witnessed Gaskins killing Dennis Bellamy, aged 28, and Johnny Knight, aged On December 4, , Gaskins led police to land he owned in Prospect , where police discovered the bodies of eight of his victims.

Gaskins was tried on eight charges of murder on May 24, , [10] found guilty on May 28 and sentenced to death , which was later commuted to life in prison when the South Carolina General Assembly 's ruling on capital punishment was changed to conform to the U.

Supreme Court guidelines for the death penalty in other states. On September 2, , Gaskins committed another murder, for which he earned the title of the "Meanest Man in America".

While incarcerated in the high security block at the South Carolina Correctional Institution , Gaskins killed a death row inmate named Rudolph Tyner, who had received his sentence for killing an elderly couple during a bungled armed robbery of their store in Burgess.

Gaskins was hired to commit this murder by Tony Cimo, the son of Tyner's victims. Gaskins initially made several unsuccessful attempts to kill Tyner by lacing his food and drink with poison before he opted to use explosives to kill him.

To accomplish this, Gaskins rigged a device similar to a portable radio in Tyner's cell and told Tyner this would allow them to "communicate between cells".

It was the first time in the history of South Carolina that a white man was sentenced to death for the murder of a black man.

I was also pleasantly surprised that my copy had an inscription to Donald Gaskins author, and the author's address was written at the back. How can I put this book into words?
